This month resident DJ Chris Annibell and percussionist Amon welcome Brooklyns favorite renaissance man to the turntables, world renowned DJ/Producer/Visual Artist GE-OLOGY!!!

This mans mutil-media resume is staggering to look at. In short he has produced music and remixes for the likes of Tupac, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, De La Soul, Jill Scott, Yukimi Nagano (Little Dragon/Koop), Sadat X (Brand Nubian), Pharoahe Monch, Vinia Mojica, Bahamadia, Res, J-Dilla, Pete Rock, Gem... just to name a few.

Additionally, GEO has has become synonymously known for album cover art, T-shirt graphics, magazine illustrations, design, animation, painting and live art. Perhaps the most famous of Ge-ology's artistic works, the classic "Body Rock" cover art (from the historic 1990’s Rawkus era) featuring Mos Def (Blackstar), Q-Tip (A Tribe Called Quest) and Tash (Tha Alkaholiks). This piece is widely recognized and still remains one of the greatest hip hop artistic covers of all time (also featured in Andrew Emery's "The Book of Hip Hop Cover Art" and listed at #3 in "EgoTrip's Book of Rap List" 25 Great EP, 12" & CD Single Covers).

Event Title: Summer Bubbles @ Cargo
Description:

Brownswood recordings, Gilles Peterson's musical home base, teams up with Peggy UNLTD for a series of Summer parties at Cargo. The Summer Bubblers nights are to showcase the freshest talent inhabiting the left of center regions in the world of contemporary Pop, Soul and Hip Hop. The first installment of the night casts its net in the direction of NYC, and the vocal talents of rapper Melo-X as well as the deep crates of the Midnight Rockers Express crew. Welcoming them to our city, soulstress extraordinaire Rox, beatmeister Seiji and Get Me! founder Lixo will act as their knowledgeable guides. Their collective talents will definitely not be lost to us.

From a very early age Rox has been home-schooled in the art of singing by a very musical family. Rox tells of family gatherings that would often end with with all the older generation singing old gospel songs with about 10 different harmonies. No wonder then that from as young as 5 Rox became obsessed with harmonies and how they could colour a melody. This obsession of hers pushed her to study the art and techniques of the most accomplished singing voices in the field. When a singer names Lauryn Hill, Mary J Blige, Sade, Mahalia Jackson, Portishead, Common and Rufus Wainright as musical influences you know someone's been doing their homework. And boy does it show. Rox writes songs from the heart and delivers them from her soul with a vocal range, both in style and execution, that is simply mind-blowing. - Recognising this, Rough Trade have just signed her to their ilustrious label. - At times understated and intimate, others positively festive, Rox has the power to move both your mind and body with just her voice. Why she isn't a house-hold name yet is anyone's guess; as far as we are concerned, Rox is a star.

Maybe it's something in the air. Or maybe even in the water. But there definitely is something slightly spooky about the rivers of talent currently flowing from the NYC borrough of Brooklyn. One of the many voices making waves States-side and currently vying for our attention in the UK is that of singer slash song-writer Melo-X, Theophilus London's partner in crime during his latest European tour. Poet, composer, modern day Casanova, Melo-X is all this and then some. Proud of his art and meticulous with his craft, Melo-X is surrounding himself with the best New York has to offer. His latest track "Let It", produced by Machine Drum, is next level ish of the highest order, and we can't wait to see him plying his trade from the hallowed stage at Cargo.

Seiji did his electronic music apprenticeship as a Drum & Bass Producer/Artist recording for the seminal Jungle/Drum & Bass label Reinforced. He was a founder member of Bugz in the Attic where they set up a studio, a label and carved out a strong reputation, both individually and collectively, as top remixers and underground electronic Artists. They also jointly ran the legendary Sunday club night/institution, Co-Op. Seiji left Bugz in 2007, since then he has worked with Roisin Murphy producing and co-writing much of her album, "Overpowered", including the single of the same name. He has also individually remixed Amy Winehouse, Erykah Badu, Frankmusik, Jazmine Sullivan and released a compilation of his remixes on BitaSweet. We are discovering nothing new by inviting Seiji to the first Summer Bubblers but in exchange we are getting assured value for money and guaranteed heat on the dancefloor.

The Midnight Rockers Express is a collective of DJs and producers from New York City whose creative output includes a mix series, a blog site, edits and versions and a sound system. The MRE's featured DJs span three generations and are a true representation of the city's musical fabric. They include Carlos Ramos who began DJ'ing as a teenager in the 70's playing disco at nightspots in the Bronx. Uptown's Elijah All-City gave up his spray cans for turntables as a teenager after his mother took him to see Frankie Crocker of WBLS play records at Bond's Disco in Times Square. He earned his stripes on the downtown party scene in the early 90's where he and a young cast of DJ's including Funkmaster Flex and Mark Ronson. The MRE's youngest DJ is GetLive who came up in Queens on the b-boy scene and through turntablist battle sessions (he was BET's 106 + Park Battle DJ Champ in '05). His skills as a live DJ have seen him rock in clubs and on-stage with Blaqstarr, Benji from Good Charlotte, Theophilus London, Blu, Wale and AOK. GetLive will be representing the MRE sound at Cargo on his way to a headlining DJ set at the Open Air Festival in Switzerland.

A good party cannot be complete without a solid dj warming up proceedings, and they do not get any more solid than Lixo, the founder of West End dj collective Get Me!. Lixo has shared turntable duties with a host of djs and artists including Prancehall, Kode 9, Seb Chew, The Heatwave, Young Turks, Mumdance, Little Boots, Cocadisco, Dances With White Girls, Isa GT, The XX, Holy Fuck, Sinden, and A Skillz.

Event Title: Tribe @ DEX club
Description:

TRIBE @ DEX CLUB FRIDAY 19th June Featuring residents Zepherin Saint & Matt L-S (Tribe Records) Special Guest: Abicah Soul (Objektivity, Chicago) Word of the Tribe vibe continues to grow following another great session with DJ Romain on guest duties earlier this month. Tribe has now firmly established itself as the only bi-weekly deep soulful house experience in London. Bringing the energy this month and joining Tribe resident djs Zepherin Saint and Matt L–S will be Abicah Soul who will be flying in from Chicago for his first ever UK gig! Abicah Soul is fast becoming one of the hot properties in the underground house scene because of his shear versatility as a producer and dj. DJ Stax (aka Abicah Soul Project) grew up in Chicago during the days of the Warehouse and Muzic Box, and his deejay sets and production—like those of friends Glenn Underground, Boo Williams, Paul Johnson, and Gene Hunt—are heavily influenced by the pioneering work of Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy. He began deejaying in 1983, when he was only 12 years old, and has been a staple in the Chi-town rave and club scene ever since, holding residencies at Smartbar, Club4, and Ohm and doing weekly radio gigs for WNUR 89.3 and prepartyradio.com. As a producer, Stax has landed releases on Classic, Jellybean, Nite Life Collective, Rush Hour, to name but a few and is also a very in-demand remixer, he has given tracks by Telepopmusik, Osunlade, Glenn Underground his signature soulful, deeply-rooted yet edgy afro-latin sound—evidenced by recent tracks such as “Musique de Ve” (Eargasmic) - is unique in dance music today and defies categorisation. Imagine Joe Claussell collaborating with Ame, or IsolÈe teaming up with Osunlade and you’re on the right track. His work has been compared to that of Jazzanova and Quentin Harris, and as a "DJ’s producer" he is one of the best-kept and most-cherished secrets in deep house. Indeed, a wide variety of deejays—from DJ Heather to Marques Wyatt, Blaze, and Gilles Peterson—have featured his tracks on their Mix CDs. He’s rocked floors everywhere from Chicago to Japan, but has yet to share his talents with a UK audience and we can’t wait to hear what he’s got in store for the Tribe crowd!! Friday 19st June Dex Club 467-469, Brixton Road London SW9 8HH Tax: £8 advance tickets from www.ticketweb.co.uk, £10 on the door For more information check: www.triberecordsuk.com

Event Title: 2009 Dance Parade_House Coalition Float
Description:
Dance Parade Inc is an 501(c)3 charity who’s mission is:

to promote dance as an expressive and unifying art form by
showcasing all forms of dance, educating the general public
about the opportunities to experience dance, and celebrating
diversity of dance in New York City by sponsoring a yearly
city-wide dance parade and dance festival.

Why we do what we do:

To honor Dance’s historical roots:
New York has never celebrated the forms of dance that it has birthed until now: Voguing, Jazz, the Jitterbug, Punk, Gothic--even Salsa was birthed in the Cuban Communities in this great city. And it is now time for Dance. New York has enjoyed the last three years of a September Art Parade and since May 2007, we are finally honoring Dance in a similar fashion.

To unite in respecting Dance’s diversity:
Dance is vital in healthy societies, helping people to communicate and affirm individual and collective identity. Dance Parade is a multi-cultural, multi-generational expression of the joy and value of these various forms of expression. It will foster cross-pollination of dance forms as it introduces audiences to novel styles and beats: teenagers to tango, clubbers to square-dancing, and seniors to hip-hop.

To support grass-roots organizations:
As an umbrella organization, Dance Parade empowers and supports dance communities that do not have access to public funding yet have a communicative art form they wish to practice and promote. We help them build websites, get access to materials, fundraise, and reach broader audiences.

To legitimize Dance as a communicative, social form of expression:
In the 19th century, ballroom dancing was deemed devil’s work. In the 1920’s, New York City enacted the Cabaret Law to stem interracial dancing from Harlem Jazz Clubs. The 1930’s had Nazi Germany quashing Swing Dancing because it was considered anarchistic. And in 2006, a New York State Supreme Court ruled that, unlike music, theater and painting, dance is not a constitutionally protected form of expression. In contrast, Dance Parade will highlight the diversity found in its many forms and showcase dance’s immense cultural and communicative importance.

To invoke joy and brotherhood:
New York’s annual dance parade will reinstate New York City as the dance performance and nightlife capital of the world. We quote Dr. Motte, the founder of Berlin’s Love parade: “Dance is spreading rapidly and is unstoppable around the world. It is about LOVE and it is about FREEDOM. This represents a much wider personal, social and spiritual transformation-revolution which will utterly change our world over the coming decades.  THIS IS OUR FUTURE. OPEN YOUR HEART! FREE YOUR MIND! FACE YOUR FEARS! LIVE YOUR SOUL! DANCE!”

“WONDER-Full™ - Tribute To The Wonder Of Stevie” a concept created by KeiStar Productions honoring the legendary genius Stevie Wonder...features DJs Spinna & Bobbito, who back in 1999, were asked to spin at a party which paid tribute to Stevie Wonder’s “Songs In The Key Of Life” album. There, the duo and KeiStar quickly realized they all had a mutual love for ‘Little Stevie's’ music and judging from the atmosphere on the dance floor that night, we knew we had a good thing going.

DJ Spinna and Bobbito have collaborated and compiled tribute CDs of Stevie Wonder’s music titled…‘The Wonder Of Stevie’, ‘Wonder Wrote It’. DJ Spinna has remixed the song “My Love Is On Fire” from Stevie’s recent album “A Time To Love”. Take a listen online...

KeiStar Productions has successfully produced this event since 1999 starting in its hometown of New York City. From then on KeiStar Productions has traveled nationally and internationally with WONDER-Full™ to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, London, Japan, Sweden, Germany and Amsterdam.

Stevie Wonder has expressed his gratitude by calling into the party in 2003 and 2004, addressing the crowd and has made a special appearance at KeiStar Production’s recent WONDER-Full™ tribute/concert after party last year (November 2007) where he delivered a heart felt speech to the audience.

In that spirit, REPUBLIC presents Formations. If REPUBLIC is the meeting of varied minds that transcend the sum of its parts, then the first stage in harnessing such a unique array of talents is to make a plan for construction. In conjunction with the launch of our new website: www.republicbrooklyn.com, Formations presents the idea that throughout Spring the world is focused on building new things out of the remains of what has passed. It is a time to pay special service to those artists who have concentrated their gifts on the idea of building upon the foundations of fundamental ideas that are ripe for reinterpretation by a new eager generation. Event Title: Studio Museum in Harlem- Opening-COLLECTED. PROPOSITIONS ON THE PERMANENT COLLECTION
Description:

Collected. Propositions on the Permanent Collection presents fourteen takes on the permanent collection of The Studio Museum in Harlem. This set of exhibitions, which includes over two hundred works in a wide range of media, is intended to give multiple perspectives and views on the art of which this Museum is so proud to be the guardian. While a chronological approach allows us to understand how art develops over time and a thematic one helps us to see the relationships between artists, this set of exhibitions takes, in some cases, idiosyncratic approaches to investigating, presenting and analyzing the works of art that the Museum has collected over the last forty years.

Founded in 1968, the Studio Museum began with a mission to present the work of African-American artists and artifacts of the African diaspora. In the Museum’s early history the mandate to collect was strong, with the idea that for the Studio Museum to have a place in the museum world it had to establish a permanent collection. The Museum was very fortunate to have the vision of the founding directors and curators, as well as the generosity of many artists and donors, with which to begin a collection that documents the achievements of artists of African descent.

Over the years there has also been a strategic focus on acquiring works by artists in our exhibitions and from our Artist-in-Residence program. Collected is significant because it charts this history of the Museum. It is an important record of our mission, from New Additions: Recently Acquired Works on Paper, which takes a sweeping look at prints, photographs, collages and drawings new to our collection; to A Family Affair, which looks at the conscious and coincidental relationships between artists who share not only love of art, but also family bonds; to the Highlight sections, each of which focuses on a singular artist or work of art, allowing an in-depth investigation of its subject and how the work relates to the collection.

Organized by the curatorial team, Collected gives us an opportunity for reflection on the great treasures that we steward, and we hope it will prompt a wonderful discussion about art made now and history as seen through the works. Also, it is always wonderful to present works that are not permanently on view. We hope that long-time friends of the Museum will see some old favorites. And we hope that those new to the Museum will see works that will make you want to continue to visit in the years to come. Throughout the Museum’s history we have proudly shown the collection and have been honored to loan works around the country and the world. We are thrilled that at this moment we can highlight our collection and prompt a new era of exploration and presentation.

Event Title: Brooklyn Photo Salon
Description:
For Gigi & Jen, the Brooklyn Photo Salon is about paying homage to the salons held during the Harlem Renaissance, while actively participating and shaping the contemporary Brooklyn renaissance.

A salon is a safe space that takes place within someone's home – a space where people gather to share their photographic practice and vision. Art, the creative process, ideas, inspiration, culture, and technique are open for discussion and debate. The salon is about give and take - teaching and learning, sharing with the community, receiving both praise and critique.

Our Brooklyn Photo Salons are held on a quarterly basis in one of our homes. Through these salons, our goal is to showcase the work of emerging and established photographers. Our aim is to promote inter-generational dialogue on photography, build a supportive community and advance the craft.

What typically happens at our Salons?

Initially, guests are welcomed to the sounds of music, laughter and chatter. Food and drinks are provided by the hosts and guests. Three photographers, curated by the Gigi & Jen, are invited to present and discuss their work. Each photographer decides what to show – new or old work; commercial, personal, documentary, abstract or fine art work. The audience is encouraged at any point to ask questions and offer critique of the work. At each Salon we feature a balance of emerging and established photographers to build and fortify networks for guidance, mentoring, and various opportunities.
Curators:
Jennifer Pritheeva Samuel (www.jpsphoto.com)
Jen works freelance in documentary film and photography. She recently completed HEAT, a documentary film about business and climate change, for PBS Frontline.

and

Régine (Gigi) Romain (www.myspace.com/gypsyphotographer)
Gigi is a travel photographer, writer and the Director of Education at MoCADA (Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts).
In celebrations of women's history month, the following photographers will be showing their work:

              Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe (www.jeannemoutoussamy-ashe.com)

              Petra Richterova (www.myspace.com/petrarichterova)

Event Title: Archeography III (Susepended Gardens)
Description:
ARCHEOGRAPHY III (SUSPENDED GARDENS) is the third in a series of
Archeography Projects at SUPERFRONT, which will present the combined
work of architects and choreographers through June 2009.  To follow
the project’s
development, please see
http://newyork.superfront.org/category/exhibits/archeography/

The Archeography Project series pairs an emerging architect or
designer with a choreographer to generate the material for a
weekend-long performance.   All aspects of orchestrating a performance
are at stake - the built parameters of boundaries and floor planes and
seats, as well as the movements and effects generated by performers.
The series presumes that precepts of movement may act authoritatively
upon architecture and, conversely, that architecture may operate
within a logic of performance.

SUPERFRONT is a new space for architectural experimentation, located
in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.  www.superfront.org

SUPERFRONT is located on 1432 Atlantic Avenue in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.
Gallery hours: Sat & Sun 1-6 PM and by appointment. Subway: A train to
Nostrand Avenue. Walk 2 avenue blocks east to Brooklyn Ave and 2 short
blocks south to Atlantic Ave. For more information:

CARMINA SOUL  (Part 3)
3rd Saturdays
@ The Old American Can Factory

In 2006 CARMINA SOUL was born in a garden in the industrial section of Williamsburg. Each Saturday we went farout of our way to gather in a space few new about; to listen, lounge and dance to music that moved us to the core. We created an environment unlike anything before it and have been searching for something like it ever since. With that spirit in mind, CARMINA SOUL returns this summer in a new, radically unique space in another industrial neighborhood; the Gowanus, Brooklyn.

Join DJ Chris Annibell and percussionist Amon as they set the musical tone while the Afrokinetic family inhabits the outdoor, interior courtyard of The Old American Can Factory, a historic 130,000 square foot, six-building industrial complex.

Join us Saturday, August 16 for Carmina Soul outside, under the stars, for part 3 of this 3 part series.

Who

Why
Fashion photography both reflects and creates our culture. Most of the time it is designed to sell you something, but the tools of fashion photography can be used for other purposes: to transmit messages that resonate on a higher level than that of pure consumption. We need less propaganda and more images that make us think.
